The Harlem Fine Arts Show Heads to NYC

Vinyl record artist, Lobyn Hamilton, is slated as one of the featured emerging artists. If you were paying attention, you may have seen his work on the hit show on Fox, Empire.

HARLEM, N.Y.

The Harlem Fine Arts Show is on its way to New York City and will set up shop at the historic Riverside Church. The show is known to be the largest of its kind featuring art from the African Diaspora.

The four-day traveling exhibition will have contemporary paintings, sculpture, and photography for sale, and is open to collectors, art enthusiasts, educators and professionals. The HFAS will showcase more than 80 national and international artists and galleries from Feb. 4 - 7, 2016.

One of the featured artist who will be in attendance is Lobyn Hamilton, an Indianapolis-based artist, who recycles vinyl records into works of cultural art. I first learned of Lobyn two years ago when I volunteered at the HFAS. It just so happened that a photographer captured an image of me admiring the Lobyn Malcolm X piece. (See - Malcolm X: Remembering the Change)

Lobyn's work is wrapped around historic Black American icons in pop culture and music. If you’re an avid viewer of Fox's hit show Empire, you may have spotted his work in the hallways of the Lyon’s family. And if you’re a close family friend to Kanye West, you may have seen one of Lobyn's vinyl creations on the walls of Yezzus.

Back to the HFAS

To kick off the annual event, the HFAS will host “Harlem Nights” at Riverside Church, which will take place on the evening of Feb. 4, 2016 at 6 p.m.

HFAS will salute New York City’s art organizations, and art aficionados will have a chance to get a glimpse of what to expect at this year’s show. "As we continue to grow the Harlem Fine Arts Show and take it across the country we never lose site that the New York show is our flagship event," said HFAS founder Dion Clarke.

HFAS Tribute

This year, HFAS will pay a tribute to lifestyle maven B. Smith and her husband Dan Gasby. Smith, who suffers from early on-set Alzheimer’s, and her husband co-authored the inspirational tome, Before I Forget, which chronicles their daily struggles with her disease.

In addition, the portrait of retiring Congressman Charles B. Rangel will be unveiled. The commissioned portrait, which will be on display at Rangel’s Congressional Library, will be unveiled during HFAS’ opening night.

Be sure to check back in to see which emerging artist caught my eye. In the meantime, follow the Harlem Fine Arts Show on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for updates leading up to the show. @HarlemFineArts
